We invite all Rotarians to join us in Reno as we celebrate these remarkable leaders and their service.” Named for the first District Governor of Rotary District 5170, this award honors an outstanding Rotarian whose service and leadership exemplify the highest ideals of Rotary. Personally selected by the District Governor, this award honors extraordinary service to Rotary International, District 5170, or an individual club during the Governor’s year of service. Named for former Rotary International President Clifford Dochterman, this award celebrates the Rotarian who most exemplifies his enduring motto: “Real Happiness is Helping Others.” This recognition honors those who inspire others through service and Rotary’s ideals. Presented to an individual, committee, or club demonstrating exceptional commitment to diversity and inclusiveness to belonging in Rotary membership and community service. The Avenues of Service Award from Rotary International recognizes Rotary and Rotaract members who have achieved all five of Rotary’s Avenues of Service at the highest level. Service Above Self has long been a hallmark of Rotarians and Rotaractors who devote their time and energy to helping their neighbors — near and far — in significant ways. Rotary created the Service Above Self Award to recognize members who fully embody our primary motto. While many Rotary members distinguish themselves through service, we want to especially recognize those who make it a way of life. Only 150 recipients worldwide are given this honor. The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service recognizes individual Rotarians and Rotaractors who have demonstrated outstanding service to the Foundation, such as through their involvement in Foundation committees, grants or programs, or by supporting Rotary Peace Fellows. The Foundation’s programs are how members transform donations into sustainable projects that change people’s lives. Each year, districts can nominate one member to honor their commitment, enthusiasm, and passion for these ideals. Nominees are approved by the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation. District 5170 encourages all clubs and members to join in congratulating this year’s honorees and to attend Far West Fest 2026 in Reno to celebrate the incredible impact of Rotary throughout the Greater Silicon Valley region. Rotary District 5170 Focuses on Action to Amplify Club Impact and Visibility
Pleasanton, CA — January 2026 — Rotary District 5170 is shifting from planning to purposeful execution, reinforcing its commitment to elevating club activities and service projects across the district. District leadership emphasizes that the foundation is already in place; the next step is consistent club-level engagement that allows the District to amplify what clubs are doing best—serving their communities.
“We don’t need more analysis—we need more shared stories,” said District Governor Herb Ritter. “When clubs provide content, the District can extend the reach, celebrate impact, and strengthen Rotary’s public image.”
To support clubs, the District Leadership Team has outlined four clear, simple tools and objectives designed to increase visibility and engagement:
-
Create and share an ezStory in DACdb so the District can amplify it through district-wide channels, including the Monthly News Bulletin.
-
Enter Club Service Projects in DACdb to enable broader sharing via platforms such as URNeeded.org and the new District 5170 "Meetup" page.
-
Tag @rotarydistrict5170 on social media posts featuring club activities, allowing the District to reshare and expand reach.

-
Encourage consistent participation: Club Presidents and Assistant Governors are asking club leaders to post at least one ezStory and one social media post per month, shared with the District for amplification.
While the District’s Public Image Team has conducted multiple outreach efforts to Club Public Image Directors—with some successes—overall engagement has remained limited. To better support clubs and strengthen district-wide visibility, the District has made the strategic decision to hire a social media virtual assistant to help us amplify our District's and clubs' social media presence, an investment included in the approved budget.
“Many districts commit significant resources to public image,” Kristen Fabo, District PI Chair added. “District 5170 has been thoughtful and conservative until now. This step ensures our clubs receive the support they need to tell their stories—and be seen.”
We will be having monthly (3rd Friday) at 12 noon Zoom calls for Club PI Chairs and anyone interested is sharing and learning. Check out the District Calendar for Zoom Link and dates.
For more information and resources, visit Rotary District 5170 PI Committee and DACdb tools.

SV Passport Club Mother's Day special Musical Event - May 9th
Rotary Club of San Jose mourns the passing of Past President Rod Diridon, Sr.
It’s hard t
o overstate the impact that Rod Diridon, Sr. (2/8/1939 - 4/3/2026) had on the Rotary Club of San Jose.
Rod joined Rotary on May 5, 1971, when he was heading up the Diridon Research Corporation. He remained a member when elected to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors in 1975 and subsequently, while running the Mineta Transportation Institute.
Rod served as President of the Rotary Club of San Jose in 2009-10. Under his leadership, 46 people joined Rotary, and the club topped 450 members for the first time. Through Rod and Gloria Duffy’s many connections, his year featured distinguished speakers such as former Commerce and Transportation Secretary Norm Mineta, former Secretary of Defense William Perry, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Congressmember Zoe Lofgren, and Four-Star General Barry McCaffrey.
While documentation is spotty, we know that Rod sponsored nearly 200 members. Past President Karen Philbrick (2023-24) recognized his recruiting prowess with “Rod Squad” ribbons affixed to 50 badges, and, in 1998, Rod was honored with the “Mike Kutsuris District Membership Development Award." Understanding that new members are the lifeblood of Rotary, Rod brought in leaders from the private, nonprofit, and government sectors. He often focused on emerging leaders and would make time to mentor people and act as a sounding board.
Rod was proud of his SJSU roots and organized funding for the Rotary Gate along E. San Fernando St. He gave generously, both to our club and Rotary International. Rod earned 10+ Paul Harris Fellowships, was a RI Major Donor, and a Silver ($50,000+) Endowment Fellow for the Rotary Club of San Jose.
One of his many enduring legacies is launching the Rotary Club of San Jose’s Climate Action Committee (now Environmental Sustainability) in 2019. He also established District 5170’s Council of Climate Action, which he led for three years. Rod traveled District 5170 and beyond tirelessly to make compelling, action-oriented presentations and to encourage the formation of climate-focused committees at the local and district level.
Rod is irreplaceable, but his climate action work is in capable hands, and the challenge for San Jose will be to make up for his formidable member recruitment efforts.
There will be celebrations of Rod’s life, but information was not available as of this publication date.
Piedmont-Montclair Rotarians Kicked Off Cherryland Peace Garden Project by Planting Trees

Piedmont-Montclair Rotary Club adopted as its Spring project the construction of a "Peace Garden" at Cherryland Elementary School in Hayward. The project is being championed by Piedmont-Montclair Rotarian Jacqueline Lafitte, a fifth grade teacher at Cherryland. P-M Rotary Club is partnering with parents' groups, teachers and other volunteers at the school to complete the project. Cherryland Elementary School has approximately 900 students who speak as many as 12 different languages, with many students facing significant challenges. The project is intended to provide a safe meditative outdoor space for students. On Saturday, March 21, 2026, P-M Rotarians joined with other volunteers to plant the first 4 trees in the garden space (purchased by P-M Rotary Club). The completed project will include a Rotary Peace Pole (donated by Rotarian and Past District Governor, Jill Deurig and her husband Tom), other plantings and ground cover, decorated walking stones, and murals painted by Cherryland students. P-M Rotarians are United for Good with Cherryland volunteers and students.

An Evening That Changes Lives: Rotaplast Gala
Volunteering with Rotaplast International has been a life-altering experience. As an organization, we provide life-changing reconstructive surgery for some of the most marginalized patients around the world. Our volunteer medical teams bring smiles to children born with cleft lip and palate, and restore function and dignity for patients with untreated burn scarring.
The impact of this humanitarian work is tangible—not only for each patient, but also for their families, their communities, and everyone fortunate enough to be part of the Rotaplast mission.
Giving is at the heart of Rotaplast.
In celebration of over 30 years of free care and more than 22,000 surgical patients, Rotaplast will host its annual Gala on May 30, 2026. I hope you’ll consider supporting this important event through sponsorship, underwriting, or by donating an auction item.
I’m also sharing early access to gala tickets before public sales open later this month, as the event has limited seating. The link is below—I hope you can join us.
