Rotary District 5170 Focuses on Action to Amplify Club Impact and Visibility
Pleasanton, CA — January 2026 — Rotary District 5170 is shifting from planning to purposeful execution, reinforcing its commitment to elevating club activities and service projects across the district. District leadership emphasizes that the foundation is already in place; the next step is consistent club-level engagement that allows the District to amplify what clubs are doing best—serving their communities.
“We don’t need more analysis—we need more shared stories,” said District Governor Herb Ritter. “When clubs provide content, the District can extend the reach, celebrate impact, and strengthen Rotary’s public image.”
To support clubs, the District Leadership Team has outlined four clear, simple tools and objectives designed to increase visibility and engagement:
-
Create and share an ezStory in DACdb so the District can amplify it through district-wide channels, including the Monthly News Bulletin.
-
Enter Club Service Projects in DACdb to enable broader sharing via platforms such as URNeeded.org and the new District 5170 "Meetup" page.
-
Tag @rotarydistrict5170 on social media posts featuring club activities, allowing the District to reshare and expand reach.

-
Encourage consistent participation: Club Presidents and Assistant Governors are asking club leaders to post at least one ezStory and one social media post per month, shared with the District for amplification.
While the District’s Public Image Team has conducted multiple outreach efforts to Club Public Image Directors—with some successes—overall engagement has remained limited. To better support clubs and strengthen district-wide visibility, the District has made the strategic decision to hire a social media virtual assistant to help us amplify our District's and clubs' social media presence, an investment included in the approved budget.
“Many districts commit significant resources to public image,” Kristen Fabo, District PI Chair added. “District 5170 has been thoughtful and conservative until now. This step ensures our clubs receive the support they need to tell their stories—and be seen.”
We will be having monthly (3rd Friday) at 12 noon Zoom calls for Club PI Chairs and anyone interested is sharing and learning. Check out the District Calendar for Zoom Link and dates.
For more information and resources, visit Rotary District 5170 PI Committee and DACdb tools.
March News Updated: Announcement for the Governor Trophy Qualification (H.E.R.B Trophy)
Rotary District 5170 Launches the “Governor's H.E.R.B Trophy” to Drive Membership Growth, Service, and Club Excellence
Fremont, CA — Rotary District 5170 has officially announced the launch of the H.E.R.B Formula, a clear, action-driven framework designed to help Rotary clubs grow stronger, increase impact, and achieve measurable success during the current Rotary year.
Introduced by District Governor Herb Ritter, the HERB Formula provides clubs with four simple, achievable priorities that align with Rotary International’s goals for membership growth, generosity, engagement, and excellence.
“The HERB Formula gives clubs clarity,” said Governor Ritter. “It’s not about doing more—it’s about focusing on what matters most and doing it well.”
The HERB Formula: Four Priorities for Club Success
-
H – Help Rotary grow when you can
Clubs are encouraged to demonstrate positive membership growth by April 15, strengthening Rotary’s future and expanding service capacity. -
E – Encourage generosity when you can
Achieve 100% EREY participation, with members contributing $25 or more to The Rotary Foundation, earning the prestigious Banner Award. -
R – Respond with action when you can
Clubs that complete and track their goals in My Rotary will qualify for the Rotary International Club Excellence Award, Rotary’s highest recognition for club achievement. -
B – Be there when you can
Clubs are encouraged to have at least three members attend four of seven District 5170 in-person events, reinforcing leadership development and district-wide collaboration.
The HERB Formula emphasizes flexibility, encouragement, and accountability—meeting clubs where they are while setting clear benchmarks for success.
“This approach recognizes that every club is different,” added Ritter. “But when we help, encourage, respond, and show up, great things happen—for our clubs, our communities, and Rotary worldwide.”

Rotary District 5170 Announces Clubs Leading the Way in Membership Growth
Rotary District 5170 Announces Clubs Leading the Way in Membership Growth Rotary District 5170 is proud to announce that 37 clubs through 2-28-26 are achieving positive net membership growth in the 2025–26 Rotary year — a strong sign of momentum across Silicon Valley and the greater Bay Area. At this year’s District Conference, Rotary District 5170 will celebrate the individuals making this growth possible — our “Member Sponsors.” Every Rotarian who sponsors a new member will be entered into a special District Conference drawing, recognizing those who personally invite others into service. Growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because someone extends an invitation.

Clubs that are close to positive territory are encouraged to push forward — every new member makes a difference.
The Message Is Clear
If you’re not growing, you’re standing still.

District 5170 Celebrates Momentum in Foundation Giving thru 2-28-26
Rotary District 5170 Builds Momentum Toward EREY Recognition
Rotary District 5170 is seeing strong momentum in Foundation giving, with nearly seven clubs already qualifying at $25 per member in support of The Rotary Foundation. That progress positions them to earn the prestigious Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY) Club Banner Award.
With continued leadership and outreach, district leaders believe more than half of our clubs can reach this milestone in the 2025–26 Rotary year. One of the four district goals tied to earning the Governor’s Trophy is clear: Encourage every Rotarian to give.
Here’s where club leaders can make an immediate impact:
- Connect with your Club Foundation Chairs and Club Presidents
- Let them know how close they are to the $25-per-member goal (district average giving is approximately $100 per member)
- Several clubs are just one or two members away from qualifying
If there is any discrepancy in reported numbers, clubs are encouraged to contact The Rotary Foundation directly for clarification.
Every contribution strengthens Rotary’s ability to serve. Together, we can turn momentum into measurable impact.

Led by District Governor Herb Ritter as part of the 2025–26 Rotary theme, Lead with Vision. Serve with Heart. Leave Your Mark., this ambitious initiative aims to raise $50,000 to fund wheelchairs that will be personally delivered by Rotary volunteers during a humanitarian mission trip to Mexico in October 2026.
Through a powerful partnership with the Wheelchair Foundation, every dollar raised will be matched — effectively doubling the impact of every contribution.

The Mission Experience
The project includes two meaningful components:
Part 1 – Service:
Rotarians will personally deliver wheelchairs to recipients and meet the families whose lives are being transformed.

An Evening That Changes Lives: Rotaplast Gala
Volunteering with Rotaplast International has been a life-altering experience. As an organization, we provide life-changing reconstructive surgery for some of the most marginalized patients around the world. Our volunteer medical teams bring smiles to children born with cleft lip and palate, and restore function and dignity for patients with untreated burn scarring.
The impact of this humanitarian work is tangible—not only for each patient, but also for their families, their communities, and everyone fortunate enough to be part of the Rotaplast mission.
Giving is at the heart of Rotaplast.
In celebration of over 30 years of free care and more than 22,000 surgical patients, Rotaplast will host its annual Gala on May 30, 2026. I hope you’ll consider supporting this important event through sponsorship, underwriting, or by donating an auction item.
I’m also sharing early access to gala tickets before public sales open later this month, as the event has limited seating. The link is below—I hope you can join us.

Area 10, 11, 12 Rotary Clubs to Host “Green @ Home” Neighborhood Tour (March 14, 2026)

Rotary Clubs of Cupertino, Saratoga and Los Altos are PARTNERING on an event!
Residents interested in home electrification and sustainable living will have an opportunity to see real-world examples up close when the Rotary Club of Cupertino, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Saratoga and the Rotary Club of Los Altos and Acterra presents the 2026 Green @ Home Neighborhood Tour on Saturday, March 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
RSVP at:
https://bit.ly/MarchNeighborhoodTour. For more information, visit:
https://acterra.org/electrification/greenhome/home-tours/
Tour attendees will be able to see working examples of energy-efficient heat pumps for space heating and cooling, heat pump water heaters, induction cooktops, rooftop solar systems, home battery storage, and electric vehicles. Several homes will also showcase rainwater catchment systems and composting systems.
In addition to viewing the equipment, participants will have the opportunity to speak directly with homeowners about their experiences. Topics will include appliance selection, contractor hiring, installation timelines, and the financial aspects of electrification, including tax credits, rebates, and incentive programs.
“Our goal is to take the mystery out of electrification,” said Steve LeFevre of Cupertino Rotary. “When neighbors can walk through a home, see the equipment in action, and talk candidly with the homeowner it makes the transition to clean energy feel practical and achievable.”
Organizers say the tour is intended to provide transparent, firsthand accounts of both the challenges and long-term benefits of moving to electric living.
The Green @ Home Neighborhood Tour is open to the public, but advance registration is required. To register for the March 14 tour, RSVP at:

From Setback to Service: How Rotary Turned a Single Connection into a Lasting Impact
When the COVID-19 pandemic brought the senior care industry to a standstill, it also paused a legacy film business dedicated to preserving life stories. Like many small business owners, the future felt uncertain.
When the time was finally right to cautiously restart, one simple outreach—just a single phone call—led to an unexpected first Rotary meeting.
What followed was immediate and organic.
Within minutes, meaningful relationships began to form—relationships that quickly grew into collaboration, friendship, and a direct connection to the Alzheimer’s Association. That connection aligned the business’s mission with a cause far greater than any one individual: supporting families, honoring memories, and making a tangible difference in the community.
This is Rotary at its best.
Rotary brings together people who care deeply about service, community, and creating real, lasting impact. It turns conversations into action and connections into purpose.
For those curious about what Rotary looks like in action, the invitation is simple: come see it for yourself.
About Rotary
Rotary is a global network of community leaders and problem-solvers dedicated to service above self. Through local and international projects, Rotary clubs create positive change in communities around the world.
