A Message from District Governor Ramesh Hariharan
Dear Fellow Rotarians from District 5170,

I heard at a recent Rotary conference, “Success is not a straight line, rather it is a bunch of trials and errors, adjustments.” Four months in this Rotary year have rolled by. There are many things to celebrate. At the same time, we are open to new ideas and feedback. Please keep them coming. Let us innovate!

The Business Expo on October 5 was a neatly successful event. There were 45 exhibitors and over 250 attendees. The keynote sessions on Security and Social Media were well received. There are many Rotarians to be thanked for putting together this event, which was led by Danny Mai. New connections were made, and ideas were exchanged in an environment of fellowship and warmth, that have now become the hallmark of our monthly events.

Another new club has been chartered! It is called the Silicon Valley Rainbow Club. Charlie Wasser spearheaded the formation of this club. Hearty congratulations!

There is continued growth in membership and member engagement! We have just crossed the 4,000 mark! Kudos to everyone!

The Interact Fall Leadership event on October 20 was attended by over 2,700 Interactors! There was boundless energy and enthusiasm. An event well done!

I just returned from Arch Klumph Society induction celebrations in Evanston to honor Rotarians from the world who are TRF donors at the $250,000 level. From our District, we had three families at this celebration. Our District’s contribution to TRF is at the highest level in the United States!

Please mark your calendars and attend these upcoming events:
  • November 6 – Foundation Giving – DRYCO, 6 PM - Let us soar even higher! There are big problems and challenges in the world, and we are Rotarians who can think and give big!
  • December 14 – Rotary @ Home – DRYCO, 6 PM - Invite family to celebrate Rotary!
  • January 11 – Mid-year meeting
  • February 1 – International Expo – We will invite the communities we are serving.
  • March 4 – Community – Celebrate our outreach and partnerships.
  • March 28 – District Training Assembly
  • April 8 – Service Above Self – That’s what Rotary is all about!
  • May 16 – District Conference – Casa Real Winery – Gorgeous Livermore Valley!
  • June 6-10 – International Convention in Honolulu – Aloha!
  • June 17 – A grand finale!
As I continue to meet with more and more clubs at the regular meetings, social and fundraising events, I get to appreciate the wonderful clubs in our District. I heard this yesterday, “Chicago is like a great quilt. People of all different backgrounds and strengths are knit together to create the great city we call Chicago!” Do you agree that Rotary is a fabulous quilt too? Together, we are providing comfort and warmth to humanity.

Yes, we are all in Rotary, uniquely connected and knit together!

In Rotary service,

Ramesh Hariharan
District Governor

    Youth Service Update

On Sunday, October 20, over 2,700 Interactors from around the district gathered at Independence High School in San Jose for their annual Fall Leadership Conference (FLC). It was a day packed with inspiration, passion, and leadership. Attendees cycled through workshops where they learned how to strengthen their leadership skills, how to engage in the district community and international projects, and how their small acts of service will ripple to make a greater impact in the community.

Gilroy Rotary Hosts Inaugural Softball Scholarship Classic
At 11 AM on the morning of Sunday October 13th, under a cloudless autumn sky at Christmas Hill Park, 16 Local Celebrities squared off against 15 of Gilroy’s own First Responders in Gilroy Rotary’s Inaugural Softball Scholarship Classic.  The game, which is now planned to be an annual event, was envisioned and developed by Gilroy Rotary Past-President Whitney Pintello and was financially underwritten by over 40 Rotarians.  The game raised over $2500, all of which will be used to augment Gilroy Rotary’s scholarship program benefitting local high school and community college students.
