Health & Hunger Awards

Dear Club Presidents,

Please participate in the HEALTH AND HUNGER AWARD system endorsed by RI President Dong Kurn Lee and Past RI Presidents Wilfrid Wilkinson and Bill Boyd. This Award system was created by Dr. Heather Yarker, RI 2008-09 Health and Hunger Resource Group General Coordinator, with the objective to encourage clubs to pursue projects that address health and hunger issues around the world:

"Rotary International's Health and Hunger Resource Group will recognize your efforts and participation in a Health and Hunger project with an Award Certificate if you advise your Health & Hunger District Coordinator. This certificate may be presented to an individual Rotarian, Club, District or a Friend of Rotary".

So therefore to qualify for HEALTH AND HUNGER AWARDS, your club must participate in Health and Hunger Project(s), internationally and/or locally. To apply for the Award Certificate(s), your club needs to e-mail me a short description of the project(s) with goals and accomplishments. This will also facilitate sharing information in the District regarding club activities in the areas of Health and Hunger (and Water which is closely related). I will collect these reports and summarize for District Governor Gary Citty for review. Award applications will also be sent to the Health and Hunger Zone 24 Coordinator David L. Gallagher to share information. Award Certificates can be presented any time during the year.

At the end of 2008-09, 38 clubs qualified for Health, Hunger, Water Awards, compared to 16 clubs in 2007-08, and 6 clubs in 2006-07. For the first time Interact and Rotaract were allowed to participate, and deserved awards: Interact (HydrAid bio-sand water filters - Dominican Republic) and Rotaract (improved fuelwood-efficient stoves & some solar cooking/water testing component - Guatemala).

Clubs made a tremendous difference in the world reporting a vast variety of projects in:

Water treatment systems, bio-sand & other filters, solar water pasteurizers, water testing, wells, pumps, pipelines, rainwater harvesting, irrigation, health education & campaigns, children's health, sanitation, hygiene, public toilets, ECO toilets, smoke-free solar cookers & fuelwood efficient stoves, children's burn centers, HIV/AIDS prevention/education/counseling including PMTCT (prevent mother to child transmission), TB prevention, blood testing, drug abuse & meth programs, cleft lips/palates, eye care, mobile clinic & patient transport vans, hospital equipment/supplies, heart surgery, prosthetics, wheelchairs, save children from dying and brain damage caused by malnutrition, distribute vitamins/food/medicines, basic medical care & education, sustainable agriculture, drip irrigation, solar drying (fruits/vegetables), planting fruit trees, livestock breeding, free meals on wheels, homeless care, holiday food programs, CSA.

The 38 HHW club awards for 2008-09 Rotary year went to:
